FDA Nutrition Label Changes: How They Affect Your Sweetener Choices

This year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made significant changes to nutrition label requirements, particularly in the labeling of carbohydrates.

According to these mandatory label revisions, every nutrition label must list the amount of added sugars in the product it describes. This number is included in the “Total Sugars” line, a descriptor which replaces the extant “Sugars” label.

The increasing prominence of added sugars in nutrition labels is increasingly pushing formulators toward formulations that rely on sweeteners that are perceived as more healthful.

Consumers Looking for “Healthful” Sweeteners

Consumers are becoming more and more savvy about their sugar consumption, and part of that awareness includes an increasing understanding of the differences between types of sugars. According to research conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Beneo, sugars with natural attributes are consistently perceived as more healthful and more desirable than other types of sweeteners. In fact, approximately two out of three study participants indicated that they agreed that naturally-derived sugars from plants, fruits and vegetables are healthier. The same number of participants also indicated they prefer natural sugars to low-calorie sweeteners. About sixty percent of study participants also indicated a desire for sweeteners that would not lead to “a sugar boost and crash effect.”

Agave Syrup: A Sweetening Solution with Natural Attributes

Agave syrup is a spot-on solution for this new intersection of consumer desires and FDA regulations. Derived from the succulent agave tequilana plant, agave syrup is a viscous sweetener that’s about forty percent sweeter than brown or granulated sugars. Its glycemic index is also significantly lower than that of sugar, ensuring it is metabolized much slower than granulated sugar and neutralizing the “boost and crash” effect that traditional sweeteners can have.

Agave offers other natural attributes centered around its plant-based origin. It is completely vegan, making it an ideal sweetener for products marketed toward a health-conscious audience with interest in products that are tailored to their customized diets.

Our premium organic blue agave syrup also offers other natural attributes that make it a desirable source of sweetening for savvy consumers looking for sweeteners that they perceive as more healthful.  It’s organic (certified USDA and EU Organic by Kiwa BCS Öko-Garantie GmbH) and non-GMO (certified by the Non-GMO Project). It’s also Kosher and Halal.

The constellation of natural attributes that our organic agave syrup offers make it the perfect sweetening choice for your next food product. Employing a plant-based, organic sweetener is sure to attract consumers who are keeping a close eye on sugar consumption and looking for better alternatives to traditional sugar products.
